Joint ISAP - ECML PKDD session

The ISAP 2015 Conference and Debate is held in Porto, in tandem with the ECML PKDD 2015 Conference.

ECML PKDD stands for the European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases. It is the leading European scientific event on machine learning and data mining and gathers together a vast community of researchers and practitioners as experts of those areas.

ISAP stands for Intelligent Systems Applied to Power Systems. It is a leading worldwide conference in the power and energy activity domain and gathers together experts and engineers with a deep  knowledge in the power system business and technical planning and operation.

ECML PKDD takes place in Porto, Portugal, from September 7th to 11th, 2015. Friday 11 is planned as a day to hold a joint ISAP/ECML session where the two communities may contact, discuss challenges, interchange knowledge and expertise. Participants enrolled in the ISAP event will be able to attend this joint session at no extra fee.

INESC TEC is proudly involved in the organization of both events.

Venue

The ECML PKDD conference takes place at Alfândega Congress Centre in Porto. This is a building from the second half of the 19th century and served as the Customs House. It has a remarkable riverside location in the historical centre of Porto, just outside the typical quarter of Miragaia and very close to Ribeira.

The building, built 150 years ago, follows an architecture that includes singular forms and natural spaces. The architect responsible for the renovation of the Customs House is Souto Moura, Pritzker prize 2011 (see more here). In 2014, it was awarded the Best Meetings and Conference Centre, Europe by the Business Destinations Travel Awards 2014.

The special session takes place Friday 11, from 14:00 to 17:00.

How to get there

Bus 500 to Matosinhos (Mercado) - step in at S. Bento (city centre railway station, by the way, worth visiting for the breathtaking portuguese azulejos), get off at Alfândega.

How to attend the session

Anyone registered in the ISAP 2015 can attend the joint session free of charge. To gain access, please address yourself to the registration desk of ECML PKDD in Alfândega, a member of the Organization of ISAP 2015 will verify your registration and provide the necessary credential.

Learning to Acquire Knowledge in a Smart Grid Environment
Abstract:

In a smart grid, a massive amount of data is collected by millions of sensors and meters on the transmission, distribution, and customers' facilities. There is a strong dependence of the smart grid on the information and communications technology for its monitoring and control. As a result, the cyber systems are also an important source of information. This presentation will be focused on the opportunities and challenges for machine learning and knowledge discovery in a smart grid environment. The application areas of (1) anomaly detection for cyber and physical security, and (2) intelligent remedial control of power grids will be used as examples. 

Bio
Chen-Ching Liu is Boeing Distinguished Professor at Washington State University, Pullman, USA. During 1983-2005, he was a Professor of EE at University of Washington, Seattle. Dr. Liu was Palmer Chair Professor at Iowa State University from 2006 to 2008. From 2008-2011, he served as Acting/Deputy Principal of the College of Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences at University College Dublin, Ireland. Professor Liu received an IEEE Third Millennium Medal in 2000 and the Power and Energy Society Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award in 2004. In 2013, Dr. Liu received a Doctor Honoris Causa from Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania. He is a co-founder of the International Council on Intelligent Systems Application to Power Systems (ISAPs) and served as the founding president. He chaired the IEEE Power and Energy Society Technical Committee on Power System Analysis, Computing and Economics. Dr. Liu served on the U.S. National Academies Board on Global Science and Technology. Professor Liu is a Fellow of the IEEE. He was elected a Member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences in 2014.
